I hit the field this morning to use my MXT for the first time. I didn't expect much because I knew I'd be learning a new machine. It was heavier than what I'm used to so I was switching hands all the time. I ran it on coins/jewelry and the presets. I managed OK. Nothing exciting for finds, but I am curious about one item (you'll understand at the end of this post).

I started at the halfway point of the field and took a trip down and got 3/4 of the way back when I checked the time. I couldn't believe it ~ 3 HOURS had passed! I had to get home to do chores and prep supper so it only has to be thrown in the oven.

So... the lot for the day... 2 large horseshoes ... the silvery stuff inside the right horseshoe kept coming in as buckle on my MXT. The can inside the left horshoe is an unusual find in the field I was in. Modern trash is next to none in there.

The 3 things on the bottom...the one on the right is a rivet or something, the middle one is a button with the loop still attached on the back, and the thing on the left I have no idea what it is. First I thought it was a badly corroded Lincoln cent. Then I thought maybe a wheatie.. then I thought maybe an Indian Head.... Then I noticed on one side had words. In the center it says ITALY ... You can tell if I try to remove the corrosion (my favorite method is hot peroxide) it will pull the words off... see the little chip in the corrosion where it pulled them off already? So I'm going to soak this in some olive oil for a little bit while I do chores and prep supper. If I can get some words out of it later I'll let you know. Maybe I'll even try to scan it and see what happens.

Congratulations on your first hunt Snowy.  You must have been enjoying yourself if you spent 3 hrs detecting.  Being proficient swinging with either arm is a good thing.  I fractured my left hand (I'm left-handed) several years ago and I was thankful that I had learned to sweep the coil and dig with either hand.  Actually digging a hole was harder to learn than sweeping a coil!LOL  I'm looking forward to reading of your progress with your new detector.

Don't ask me how I got ITALY out of the word SHALL, but I did.

Anyway, I have no idea what this is. A hot peroxide bath would pull the green off, and I'm afraid the letters are in the green. I fear I'd be left with a blank copper disk if I used the peroxide, so it's back in the olive oil.

I had Owl hold this for me while I took a picture. You can see some of the words but I can't make them all out. Can anyone help?

On the top to the right, around the edge is the word UNION, and in the center it says IT MUST on one line, AND on one line SHALL on the next line BE on the next line and around the edge on the bottom it says PRESERVED .... so, I've got: _________ UNION IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED.

The front side looks like it might have a wreath, but it's so bad I can't tell anything.

Here's the pic:

Owl I think you are right.  The language sounds pretty much like what has been on Civil War patriotic tokens I've found.  WTG Snowy, that is a great find on your first hunt.

I'm only wishing that token had more detail, or I could clean it up. I've never had something I didn't dare try to clean before.

Owl and I went out for a quick spin in that field tonight and I started out working on my theory (as I did this morning). I found a large flat and a musketball about 10 feet apart (shown on the right in the picture).

There was no breeze out there and the sun was beating on the field so sweat was pouring off us. I left my area and went towards Owl. That's where I started getting junk.

So... my theory (the one I didn't want to post yesterday because I didn't want to junx myself) was that there was a well travelled path through that field. All of this morning's items and the button and musketball from tonight were found in line with each other.

It's a good thing I've got 2 days off in a row this weekend for the Monday holiday. I wanna spend some time and dig everything out there. We'll see what the weekend brings.

Snowy....nice finds, love the CW token, that MXT and you are gonna do great things together!!! :049:

FYI on the Civil War tokens..There were two types...Patriotic and Store Card tokens issued during the civil war due to the shortage of coinage because everyone was hoarding coins. The Patriotic tokens had some kind of Patriotic saying on the such as Donna's. The storecard tokens usually had the name of the store or manufacurer on them and I believe both sets of tokens were issued from 1861 thru 1865 and I think there may have been a few minted in 1866 and 1860 as well.

boy I hope when I go out on my first real hunt (hopefully this weekend) when I get my new Tesoro this week, ends up doing this well! Follow that line from your hunch!

Snowy, that is an awesome token. I can't believe you found it on your first time out with new machine. I'll bet it's a sign of things to come.;)

I'm hoping so. That's a big field and we haven't hardly touched it.

Banshee, I'm sure you'll do fine. Just give yourself the time to learn your machine and be patient. :D
