I had taken my TDI to a local park to get some more hours on it.  Had just dug my first target when a lady pulled up in her car and walked over to me.  She introduced herself as Cathy, the new park superintendent and told me someone was digging large holes and not filling them.  She added that she knew it wasn't me because she watched me retrieve a coin before she drove up.  Cathy wanted me to let her know if I saw who it was that was leaving the holes.  There aren't many people that I see hunt the park but I told her who I thought the culprit might be.  She told me that when she brought the matter up at the board meeting the other board members mentioned the same person I did.  Cathy said if she caught this fella leaving unfilled holes he would be told he could not hunt the park any more.  She was really very nice and even went so far as to suggest areas I might want to hunt for old coins.  She also said she was interested in detecting and wanted to know what kind of detector she could get that wouldn't cost her an arm and a leg.  I told her that the two best starter units I knew of were the Garrett Ace 250 abd the Fisher F2.  Then Cathy asked me if I would be willing to hunt for lost items reported by park patrons.  I told her I already did just that and had found a wedding band a fellow had lost at the ball field just a month or so ago.  I gave her my name and phone number  and we ended up talking for an hour or so until the thunder and lightning started.  One other thing Cathy told me was she intends to have more events at the park to draw more people there.  That sounded great to me cause the more people there the more stuff they lose for me to find.LOL

Great story, but sad once again to see the slobs of our hobby ruin it.  This is what causes all of us to lose places to hunt.  Is it so hard to fill in a hole or take the garbage you dig with you ?  I really don't understand these guys.  It's not like they are brand new to our hobby , at least not most of them.

Common sense would tell you not to leave a mess, and to fill back in your holes.  I just don't get this?  Do they think they could go to a park somewhere and stand there and start throwing newspapers, cans, bottle  all over the place and get away with it.

There is no difference, and in fact may be worse, that looks disgusting when you see holes left open by inconsiderate treasure hunters.  Once again a few bad apples will eventually ruin it for everyone.

Phil that's a really good story, congrats on the new contact too. It sounds like Cathy can be a real help to you and all detectorests that care about the hobby and not just out to destroy properties.

The man who is digging the big holes and not filling them is mentally handicapped.  You see him riding around town on his bike with his metal detector.  I witnessed him digging in the front lawn of the high school and he was throwing the dirt from a hole over his shoulder.  Honest, it looked like a badger digging a hole the way the dirt was flying.  I don't know what they will do with him, I tried to talk to him once but he's not very talkative.  I've had a couple of times when he showed up at a school I was detecting.  It was kind of funny as he would see me find a coin and then run to get in front of me and start swinging his detector.  I would walk a different direction and as soon as I found another coin he would run to get in front of me again.  After about 4 or 5 times of this I just went to another site to hunt and let him detect there.

Hey Phil,

That was a great story looks like you've got the detector fairy on your side.

Cathy sounds a very nice person and a good allie for ya.

Just maybe she'd make a good huntin' buddy, she probably knows places you don't.

I pride myself in making it hard to find my

diggen spots in a park.

People who don't care are a slap in our

faces.

I think you are an ambassador for our

hobby.

I think we should be concious of the fact

that we each represent our hobby and

should act in a way that shows integrity.

I'm glad she didn't lump all MDers together and she is willing to separate and punish the bad apple who could potentially ruin it for everybody else. Hats off to this fine lady for going the extra mile!

Phil,

Way to go, good PR for detecting!!:049:

I prospect for gold and use detectors to help in that endeavor out in the wilds of nature, I find holes that others have dug looking for nuggets and I fill the ones I find and the ones I dig, I also detect for coins, jewelry, and relics, I fill my holes no matter where I dig and teach my kids and any "newbies" to do the same.

I believe that just being alive that we "dig" holes in our world and should fill them, whether it is working at your job or helping others in their lives.

Nice story, seems Cathy is a nice lady who really cares about her job.  She is the kind we need on our side.

I am sure someone knows the guy leaving the holes.  Maybe his family could be contacted and suggest a class to help him improve as a member of our hobby.
